Timo Andres' Earthly Feast

Now that the holidays are upon us, what better way to celebrate than with some comfort food? Go out and get your goose, your orange pomanders, your gingerbread-- but don't forget about the other Comfort Food-- that is, Timo Andres' new choral work available on PSNY! Comfort Food was commissioned and premiered by Present Music in Milwaukee for their annual Thanksgiving concert, and the text for the work is taken from an informal survey of "pedestrian and earthly food items, an episode of depressants, and finally into the somewhat metaphysical."

For a taste of Comfort Food, listen to an audio excerpt:

Comfort Food is also the first choral work available on PSNY-- be on the look out for more to come!

December has also been a big month for Andres: the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra recently performed an all Mozart/Andres program at Brooklyn's Galapagos Art Space, featuring pianist David Kaplan. The concert, on December 6th, featured two of Timo's works for solo piano: How Can I Live In Your World Of Ideas? and It takes a long time to become a good composer, both available on PSNY. It also included Timo's new string quartet, Thrive on Routine, commissined in 2010 by the ACME Ensemble.

Two Weeks, Four Concerts

As the '11-12 season comes to a close, late May sees four terrific events in New York, featuring PSNY composers from around the country.

First up: Red Light New Music presents their season-closing concert on May 21st at Symphony Space in New York. Music in Layers features both new and newly arranged chamber music works, written by John Cage and Red Light New Music composers Christopher Cerrone, Adrian Knight, Vincent Raikhel, Liam Robertson and Scott Wollschleger, performed by the core Red Light New Music Ensemble. The program includes the NYC Premeire of Adrian Knight's Trio, available on PSNY:

On the heels of that Monday night concert is a Wednesday night with Wet Ink with the Peter Evans Quintet at Roulette, performing Alex Mincek's "Pendulum VII," forthcoming from PSNY. (We're working as fast as we can to get everything ready for publication!)

The next day, May 24th, sees the premiere of Histories, by the composer collective Sleeping Giant, which includes our composers Andrew Norman, Christopher Cerrone and Timo Andres, along with Ted Hearne, Jacob Cooper, and Robert Honstein. Premiering the work will be the Deviant Septet, formed around the core instrumentation of Stravinsky's L'HIstoire du Soldat, here performing a work described as a "companion piece" to that great masterwork of the early 20th century. The performance will take place at Brooklyn's Issue Project Room.

And, finishing out the month of May, Bang on a Can pianist Vicky Chow performs Christopher Cerrone's Hoyt-Schemerhorn at The Stone on May 29th. (If you haven't been to The Stone yet, now's your chance!)

Go Get'em, Timo & Andrew!

PSNY Composer Timothy Andres is currently in Los Angeles for a string of performances this week and next: two with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and one with wild Up, a modern music collective. The LACO concerts look great: one a world premiere of "Old Keys," commissioned by LACO's Sound Investment; the other a performance of his solo piano work, "Sorbet" (which you can conveniently purchase on this site!).

Curiously, wild Up's concert is themed "Brooklyn vs. Los Angeles." While we're not at all biased (although most of our office lives in Brooklyn), we'll have another pinch-hitter on the Brooklyn roster: Andrew Norman, proud resident of Bed-Stuy. I'm not exactly sure how the judging will work, but it looks like it'll be a good concert regardless. (Sadly, my fantasies of an Iron Chef-style composer competition will probably not come to fruition.) But with Andres and Norman on one side, the odds might be slightly stacked....
