Hannah Lash at the New York Philharmonic Biennial

The New York Philharmonic's second Biennial festival is well underway, with exciting concerts popping up all over the city. Fresh on the heels of the premiere of her chamber opera "Beowulf" in Boston, Hannah Lash returns to New York to see two performances of her works, in venues both intimate and grand. On May 25th, Lash's Leaves, Space, a work for double bass and harp, was performed at New York Public Radio's Jerome L. Greene Space, in a program featuring composers from the Yale School of Music. This New York Premiere was live-streamed on WQXR's Q2, which regularly live-streams concerts in the New Music New Haven series.

On June 5th, Lash's music will again be heard in the newly-named David Geffen Hall. The Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra has programmed a concert entitled Young Americans, referring both to the youth of their performers and the youth of the composers they've programmed. In addition to works by Jennifer Higdon, Ashley Fure, and Nico Muhly, the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra will perform the World Premiere of Hannah Lash's Chaconnes, commissioned by Interlochen. Don't miss this chance to hear Lash's intimate writing expanded to an entire orchestra!

Christopher Cerrone's "High Windows" on Q2 Music's "LPR Live" Podcast

This year Q2 Music, WQXR’s online contemporary classical music channel, launched “LPR Live”, a podcast showcasing performances recorded at Le Poisson Rouge and interviews with composers and musicians. On Tuesday, host Conor Hanick invited Christopher Cerrone and conductor Andrew Cyr to discuss Cerrone’s work for string quartet and string orchestra, High Windows:

Cerrone talks briefly about the unlikely source material for the piece, and the pitfalls of writing for string orchestra. Cyr weighs in as well, explaining what it’s like to be inside the music. After their brief conversation, the podcast closes with the full performance of High Windows by Quartet Senza Misura and the Metropolis Ensemble. Check out a performance of High Windows below:

Timo Andres' "Word of Mouth" at Carnegie Hall

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, one of America's finest chamber ensembles, is no stranger to new music. In fact, through long-term, innovative commissioning programs, Orpheus has comissioned and premiered dozens of new works by living composers—often explicitly linked to their lush performances of canonical European masterworks.

Timo Andres has worked with Orpheus in the past, being chosen for their Project 440 commissioning project in 2010, and seeing his Thrive on Routine performed by Orpheus at Galapagos Art Space in 2012. For Andres' new commission, the composer meditates on American identity and the tradition of Sacred Harp singing, resulting in his new composition, Word of Mouth.

Named for the Word of Mouth Chorus, a widely-recorded Sacred Harp singing group from the 1970s, Andres' new piece premiered on February 7, 2015, in a program alongside works by Schubert and Mendelssohn, whose own Songs Without Words echoes Andres' exploration of the relationship between instrumental music and the human voice.

The New York Times called Word of Mouth an "exhilirating chamber symphony suffused with optimism."
