Prizes, Prizes, Prizes...

It's been an unbelievable past few days: first, the Guggenheim Foundation announced their 2012 Fellows, which included PSNY Composers Keeril Makan, Kate Soper, and Alex Mincek, as well as Schott composer Xiaogang Ye. And just this afternoon, the Pulitzer Prize board announced that Andrew Norman's "The Companion Guide to Rome" was a 2012 Finalist!

It's not hard to hear why the panel liked Andrew's work so much...

Oh, and did I mention that you can purchase performance material right here on PSNY? String quartets, get on this!

Ken Ueno and Katharina Rosenberger Join PSNY

We're delighted to announce two new members of the PSNY family: composers Katharina Rosenberger and Ken Ueno. Both based in California, Ken and Katharina are two composers who explore both new sonic possibilities and show deft and innovative approaches to organizing those sounds in their works for small ensembles.

Here's a brief introduction to Ken, produced by Meet The Composer Studio (including some awesome footage of Ken's singing!)

And here's some footage of Katharina's video opera collaboration with Ivan Talijancic, "x - suite filante":

Both of these composers' voices are incredibly strong, unique, and beautiful; we hope you take a look at the chamber works we've started with: Katharina's "scatter 2.0" and Ken's "...blood blossoms..."

Go Get'em, Timo & Andrew!

PSNY Composer Timothy Andres is currently in Los Angeles for a string of performances this week and next: two with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra and one with wild Up, a modern music collective. The LACO concerts look great: one a world premiere of "Old Keys," commissioned by LACO's Sound Investment; the other a performance of his solo piano work, "Sorbet" (which you can conveniently purchase on this site!).

Curiously, wild Up's concert is themed "Brooklyn vs. Los Angeles." While we're not at all biased (although most of our office lives in Brooklyn), we'll have another pinch-hitter on the Brooklyn roster: Andrew Norman, proud resident of Bed-Stuy. I'm not exactly sure how the judging will work, but it looks like it'll be a good concert regardless. (Sadly, my fantasies of an Iron Chef-style composer competition will probably not come to fruition.) But with Andres and Norman on one side, the odds might be slightly stacked....
