All-PSNY Concert at the University of Memphis

Kamran Ince, composer and professor of Composition at the University of Memphis, recently led a concert of the U of M's Contemporary Chamber Players at the Rudi E Scheidt School of Music. The program included Ken Ueno's Visible Reminder of Invisible Light, Alex Mincek's Subito: No. 2, Timo Andres' I Found It By The Sea, Adrian Knight's Vain Attempts, and Keeril Makan's Tender Illusions. Check out this playlist of some of Kamran Ince's own compositions below, which were recently performed in a composer portrait concert by Milwaukee's leading new music organization, Present Music

PSNY Composers at the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music

The Festival of Contemporary Music at Tanglewood is one of the highlights of the national concert season, regularly featuring stunning performances and premieres of the most exciting and provoking new music from contemporary composers. This year the festival comes a bit early, though we can't complain! PSNY composers can be found on nearly every program throughout the 5-day festival, which features chamber music, theatrical works, and orchestral works.

Starting things off on Thursday is Fred Lerdahl's  Wake, for soprano and chamber ensemble; on Saturday, Keeril Makan's  2, Hannah Lash's  Friction, Pressure, Impact, and Anthony Cheung's  Roundabouts will be performed on the same program. Sunday morning sees the world premiere of Bernard Rands' Folk Songs, and later in the evening Kate Soper's  Helen Enfettered, a theatrical work.

And for those in the Northeast this weekend, don't miss the latest production of Tobias Picker's  An American Tragedy at Glimmerglass, running from July 20th to August 24th. The vocal score for this work is available from PSNY, in case you want to follow along from the house.

A Keeril Makan Premiere, Conducted by Richard Carrick

Boston has always been a strong home for new music, and this weekend, across the Charles River, MIT hosts the world premiere of Keeril Makan's Letting Time Circle Through Us, for percussion, cimbalom, acoustic guitar, piano, violin, and cello. Makan's meditative, crystalline music has been recorded by ICE, the Kronos Quartet, and the Either/Or Ensemble-- and on Saturday, April 5th, fellow PSNY composer Richard Carrick leads the Either/Or ensemble in the performance of Makan's new piece. No stranger to performing Makan's work, Either/Or has recorded several of his works, and are a Visiting Artist ensemble at MIT for the 2013-2014 season. Check out some of our favorite works be Keeril Makan over at his Soundcloud page

Richard Carrick is also releasing a new CD on New Focus Recordings of compositions for solo electric guitar, entitled Stone Guitars. A preview of material on the forthcoming album can be seen below.
