2016 Summer Festival Digest

With the close of the 2015/2016 concert season, musicians and music lovers reconvene at summer festivals throughout the world. This year’s festival line-up includes many exciting events – from the world premieres of Thomas Adès’s third opera The Exterminating Angel and Huw Watkins’s Cello Concerto, to new productions of Douglas J. Cuomo’s Doubt and Tobias Picker’s Fantastic Mr. Fox, as well as the US premiere of George Benjamin’s Dream of the Song.

Aspen Music Festival
The 68th Aspen Music Festival features performances of works by Timo Andres, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Pierre Boulez, Julian Anderson, Luciano Berio and Ted Hearne. Read more. 

BBC Proms
The 2016 BBC Proms includes the world premiere of Huw Watkins’s Cello Concerto with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and cellist Paul Watkins as soloist. Additional performances include works by Jörg Widmann, Thomas Larcher, Julian Anderson, Matthias Pintscher and more. Read more. 

Lucerne Festival
Matthias Pintscher begins his first season as Principal Conductor of the Lucerne Festival Academy. Read more.

Salzburg Festival – Thomas Adès, Peter EötvösFriedrich Cerha
Among the events at this year’s Salzburg Festival is the highly anticipated premiere of Thomas Adès’s new opera, The Exterminating Angel. Also taking place is the premiere of Peter Eötvös’s new “meta-oratorio” Halleluja – Oratorium Balbulum and a new work for large orchestra—Eine blassblaue Vision—by Friedrich Cerha

Tanglewood Music Festival
The Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music presents the US premiere of George Benjamin’s Dream of the Song, for countertenor, female chorus and orchestra, along with music by Pierre Jalbert, Julian Anderson, Anders Hillborg, Jonathan Harvey, Pierre Boulez and more. Read more.

Yellow Barn Music Festival
The Yellow Barn Music Festival hosts Stefano Gervasoni as its composer-in-residence and also performs works by Matthias Pintscher, Beat Furrer, Thomas Adès, György Ligeti, Jörg Widmann and others. Read more.

Grafenegg Festival
Christian Jost serves as composer-in-residence at this year’s Grafenegg Festival, with the premiere of An die Hoffnung, based on the eponymous song by Beethoven (Op. 94), for tenor and orchestra. Read more.
