Union Avenue Opera presents Douglas J. Cuomo's Doubt

Saint Louis based Union Avenue Opera presents a new production of Douglas J. Cuomo’s Doubt, directed by Tim Ocel, opening August 19. The production stars Christine Brewer, who returns to the role of Sister Aloysius Beauvier, which she originated in the 2013 world premiere production at Minnesota Opera. Additional performances take place August 20, 26 and 27 at the Union Avenue Christian Church.

With a libretto by John Patrick Shanley based on his Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning play about a battle of wills ignited at a Bronx Catholic School in 1964, the opera was commissioned by Minnesota Opera as part of the company’s New Works Initiative. Cuomo writes:

Gender politics, race relations and the role of the church; questions about personal responsibility, doubt, right and wrong are all brought to bear here – issues that are no less vital today than they were 45 years ago. So much in Doubt is about what is unsaid, what is continually running beneath the surface, which I see as an invitation to music.

Union Avenue Opera’s performances of Doubt are the first since the opera’s 2013 premiere at the Minnesota Opera where it opened to rave reviews, hailed as a "gripping," "inventive" (Associated Press) and "absorbing" opera "that speaks from the heart" (Minneapolis Star Tribune).

Details on the production can be found at unionavenueopera.org.
