World Premiere of Hannah Lash's <em>Concerto No. 2</em> at Colorado Music Festival; <em>Pulse-space</em> Debuts at Seal Bay Festival

On July 31, Hannah Lash joins the Colorado Music Festival as soloist in the premiere of her Concerto No. 2 for harp and orchestra. Jean-Marie Zeitouni leads the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra in the premiere, which takes place at the Chautauqua Auditorium in Boulder, CO.

The new concerto follows the successful premiere of Lash’s Concerto No. 1 for harp and chamber orchestra, which debuted in 2015 with Lash performing with the American Composers Orchestra. Of her Concerto No. 2, Lash writes:

Concerto No. 2 is in three movements: the first is a gentle arabesque – an extended cadenza for the harp with orchestral accompaniment. The second movement distances the soloist from the orchestra almost violently: the harp’s music is serene, evoking an earlier period – a kind of memory of a landler waltz – while the orchestra surges restlessly. The third movement joins soloist and ensemble in a sweeping recall of some of the material from the first movement, now faster and more dynamic.

Prior to that, Lash receives the premiere of her recent string quartet Pulse-space on July 20 and 21 at the Seal Bay Festival, performed by the Cassatt String Quartet. Pulse-space, commissioned by Guggenheim Works & Process, explores relationships between pulses created by bow changes and pulses of the beatings between closely spaced pitches within cluster-chords.

And over at the Chautauqua InstitutionTimothy Muffitt led the Music School Festival Orchestra in a recent performance of Lash’s orchestral work Eating Flowers on July 11. Eating Flowers was a commission from the Pacific Harmony Foundation for the 2015 Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.
