Aspen Music Festival Features Works by Julian Anderson, Timo Andres, Ted Hearne, Korngold and more

The Aspen Music Festival returns to the bucolic Rocky Mountains with an impressive lineup of contemporary music for its 67th season.

On July 2, the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble gave a performance of Timo Andres’s Trade Winds for clarinet, percussion, piano, and string quartet, alongside Korngold’s Songs of the Clown, Op. 29 and Pierre Boulez’s Dérive I. Aspen Festival alumnus Blake Pouliot joined the Festival Philharmonic Orchestra on July 6 for a performance of Korngold’s Violin Concerto, Op. 35 led by Hugh Wolff.

On July 9, Julian Anderson’s fascinating new chamber work, Van Gogh Blue, received a performance by the Aspen Contemporary Ensemble, led by Donald Crockett. Luciano Berio’s Requies for chamber orchestra is featured as part of the Aspen Conducting Academy Orchestra program on August 9, and rounding out the festival is Ted Hearne’s But I Voted for Shirley Chisholm for ensemble and fixed electronics on August 13.
