In the fall of 2020 The String Orchestra of Brooklyn asked me to compose a work which could be performed outside and require little to no rehearsal time. Not only did I want to create a work that was fairly easy to put together, but also one that gave the public an opportunity to listen and participate with a large sound mass in a public space. In Outside Only Sound, each player is provided a set of small bells. The string players are spread out in an open space to create a magical field of tinkly bells sounds. The percussion section bows a variety of metal mixing bowls to create an ambient drone. The “anyone” bell part can also be performed by any number of performers and non-musicians. The listening audience should be encouraged to walk around the musicians.
