yMusic's New York Premiere of Andrew Norman's Difference at Carnegie Hall and Klaus Mäkelä Leads Sustain With The Cleveland Orchestra
Jan. 25, 2023
On January 19, yMusic performed the New York premiere of Andrew Norman'sDifference for chamber ensemble at Carnegie's Zankel Hall. The composer notes: "Difference is a gradually-unfolding, circular meditation on the things that instruments—and instrumentalists—have in common, and the things that make them different."
Writing in The New York Times, Seth Colter Walls commented on the work: "Norman’s score, as is often the case, was exquisitely paced. Ideas don’t overstay their welcome, but even when that threatens to become the case, he tends to pile on fresh material just in time (and long past the point where another composer might stop). As the patterns deepen and the lengths of phrases extend, to the point of beggaring belief, Norman’s music makes you want to cheer for him — as well as for the artists who bring it to life."
Difference was co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall, Duke Performances at Duke University, University Musical Society at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and Cal Performances, University of California, Berkeley. yMusic performed the world premiere of the work at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in November, 2019.
Also of note, Andrew Norman's Sustain will be performed by The Cleveland Orchestra, under the baton of Klaus Mäkelä, on February 2-5.
