New Music for the Holidays
Dec. 04, 2017
The Houston Symphony and conductor Steven Reineke presented Songs of Freedom: A Celebration of Chanukah, a medley of traditional Chanukah songs arranged by Judith Clurman, Larry Hochman and Brian Stokes Mitchell for baritone, SATB chorus and orchestra at Houston's Jones Hall on December 1-3. Reineke leads the work again with the National Symphony Orchestra at The Kennedy Center on December 8. The New York Pops featuring Clurman’s own Essential Voices USA performs the work at Carnegie Hall on December 15 and 16. Exquisite and accessible, Songs of Freedom unifies some of the best-loved Chanukah melodies into a masterwork for chorus, soloists, and orchestra that has quickly become a perennial hit with audiences and performing ensembles alike. The work is featured on Essential Voices USA’s 2014 recording, Cherished Moments: Songs of the Jewish Spirit.

From New Haven to San Antonio, audiences throughout the United States have multiple opportunities this season to hear Nigel Hess's ebullient work, A Christmas Overture. Composed in 2007 for John Rutter's popular Christmas Celebration, A Christmas Overture weaves together a medley of favorite traditional carols including "Ding Dong Merrily on High, "Il est né le divin enfant," "Personent hodie," and many more.
