World Premiere of Thomas Larcher's Ouroboros with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta

Ouroboros, a new cello concerto by renowned composer and pianist Thomas Larcher, receives its world premiere on February 11 with Candida Thompson leading the Amsterdam Sinfonietta and cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras.

Ouroboros was commissioned by a consortium of the Amsterdam Sinfonietta, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Lausanne Chamber Orchestra, Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Munich Chamber Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. Constructed in three movements, the second movement is an extended cadenza for solo cello and piano. Unlike in traditional concerti, the soloist acts as an initiator of processes rather than a virtuosic centerpiece. Its rhythmically complex textures require the orchestra to listen and play as a much smaller ensemble. The work was written to be performed with or without a conductor.

Following the premiere, the Amsterdam Sinfonietta takes the work on tour, with performances at the Vienna Konzerthaus (February 13) and in the Netherlands at the Muziekcentrum Enschede (February 18) and the Stadsgehoorzaal Leiden (February 19). On April 4 and 5, Pascal Rophé leads Queyras and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne in performances at the Salle Metropole in Switzerland.
