World Premiere of Howard Shore's A Palace Upon the Ruins at Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival

The Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival and La Jolla SummerFest host the world premiere of A Palace Upon the Ruins in August, a new song cycle by Howard Shore for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble. The premiere takes place on August 10 at the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, featuring mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano. On August 15, Cano joins the musicians of La Jolla SummerFest for the work’s west coast premiere.

Co-commissioned by the Bridgehampton Festival and La Jolla Music Society, A Palace Upon the Ruins includes original words by long-time collaborator Elizabeth Cotnoir. The work, scored for an ensemble of flute, percussion, harp, piano and cello, tells the story of an unkept promise. Shore and Cotnoir elaborate:

The inspiration for these songs came from a story from the past that speaks of the healing of an unresolved trauma. These impressionistic verses explore themes of loss, awareness, healing, and redemption.

Water is the framework within which the story is set. Here the idea of water serves as a symbol of spirit. As water takes many forms—fog, ice, and rain for example—the astral, too, manifests in many forms.
