Premieres by Akira Nishimura, John Woolrich and Gerald Barry with the New Juilliard Ensemble

The New Juilliard Ensemble, led by Joel Sachs, opened its season with the US premieres of Akira Nishimura’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 and John Woolrich’s The Devil in the Clock and After the Clock, as well as the New York premiere of Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions by Gerald Barry. The performance took place October 3 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater.

Woolrich’s The Devil in the Clock, from 2012, is a brief work for chamber ensemble that was commissioned by the BBC to be performed in 10 different locations throughout South Kensington, London by the London Sinfonietta. After the Clock, an earlier work for chamber ensemble, was commissioned for the 2005 BBC Proms and premiered by the National Youth Orchestra Sinfonietta, conducted by Paul Watkins.

Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions, scored for 15 players, takes its title from the London music shop, Feldman’s, which sold collections of popular music, some of which were called Feldman’s Sixpenny Editions. For Barry, “collections like these were among my first feverish encounters with music as a boy.” The work was co-commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Nishimura's five chamber symphonies have all been commissioned by the Izumi Sinfonietta, the first three during the composer’s tenure as Music Director with the orchestra. His Chamber Symphony No. 1 received its premiere in 2003 with Norichika Iimori leading the orchestra, while his most recent, Chamber Symphony No. 5 "Reincarnation", was debuted in 2016 and features a soprano soloist with a setting of 13th-century texts from the historic Shin-Kokin-Wakashu anthology of “waka” poetry.
