Arnold Schoenberg's 150th Birthday Anniversary Celebrated With Performances of his Major Works

September 13 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Arnold Schönberg, one of the most outstanding and revolutionary composers of the 20th century. Performances of a number of Schönberg's major works took place this month. Schönberg's Gurre-Liederwas performed by the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and Alan Gilbert in Hamburg on September 11; at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan by the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra and Chorus, led by Riccardo Chailly on September 13, 16, and 17; and by Petr Popelka and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Musikverein on September 13.

Also on September 13, Daniele Rustioni led the Orchestre de l’Opéra de Lyon in a performance of Pelleas und Melisande at Festival MITO in Milan while the Berlin Philharmonic, led by Lahav Shani, performed the work on September 19-21 at the Berliner Philharmoniker.
Pierre Boulez leads the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in a performance of Pelleas und Melisande at the Lucerne Festival.
Danielle Gatti led the Staatskapelle Dresden in a performance of Verklärte Nacht at the Grafenegg Festival on September 7. The Lapland Chamber Orchestra, under the baton of John Storgårds performed the same work at Finland's Korundi Rovaniemi on September 11-12. Klaus Mäkelä and the Concertgebouw Orchestra performed the work alongside Mahler's Symphony No. 1 "Titan" at the Concertgebouw on September 19 & 21.
