Naxos Features Lee Hoiby and Joseph Schwantner on New Recordings

Naxos has released a new recording of songs by Lee Hoiby on their American Classics series, entitled A Pocket of Time after his song of the same name. One of America's most celebrated composers for vocal music and songs, Hoiby has compiled over 20 compositions on this recording that span nearly 60 years of his compositional life. The songs on this recording take their texts from the American canon as well, with such notable authors as Elizabeth Bishop, Lewis Carroll, Walt Whitman, and Wallace Stevens. Featuring soprano Julia Faulkner, baritone Andrew Garland and the composer on piano, the disc includes A Pocket of Time, Pierrot, Winter Hubris, Lied der Liebe, Nuits, The Darkling Thrush, Last Letter Home, and The Nightingale and the Lark (from his opera A Month in the Country).

Joseph Schwantner's Recoil for wind ensemble is also featured on a new Naxos recording by The Hartt School Wind Ensemble, directed by Glen Adsit. Schwantner writes of Recoil, which was premiered in 2004 by the University of Connecticut Wind Ensemble:

Recoil, a highly rhythmic work, opens with an aggressive six-note figure played by piano and ringing, pitched percussion. This obsessively articulated pitch collection is the primary generative element that frames many of the linear, harmonic and gestural ideas that occur throughout the work.
