Luke Bedford's Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra Premieres with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin

Luke Bedford's Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra Premieres with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin

On October 18, the Arcis Saxophon Quartett joins the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin for the world premiere of Luke Bedford’s Concerto for Saxophone Quartet and Orchestra. Ben Gernon conducts the performance which takes place at the Philharmonie Berlin.

A concern for Bedford when composing his Concerto was the “potential for division” between the saxophone and orchestral sounds. “Saxophones are something of outsiders,” Bedford writes, “and yet four saxophones have the power to dominate an entire orchestra.” He elaborates:

I wanted to create a work where both the quartet and the orchestra share ideas and allow each other to sing. There is drama in every movement, but the instruments face it together.
