Joe Hisaishi's Symphonic Suite “Kiki’s Delivery Service” Published by Zen-On

Joe Hisaishi's Symphonic Suite “Kiki’s Delivery Service” Published by Zen-On

Zen-On will publish the score of Joe Hisaishi's Symphonic Suite “Kiki’s Delivery Service” on April 15. Click here to preview the score. The New Japan Philharmonic World Dream Orchestra, under the composer's baton, gave the world premiere of the piece in 2019. Joe Hisaishi notes:

"This work is based on the music for the animated film Kiki's Delivery Service created by Studio Ghibli in 1989 and was reconfigured as a symphonic suite. The story of the main character Kiki using her ability to fly to become independent resonated with many people. It continues to be loved by people all over the world even to this day. Because the setting for the film was a European seaside town, I used the sounds of the accordion and the mandolin, etc. I composed it with May and June in southern France and Eastern Europe in mind. It goes without saying that I focused on expressing the changes of thinking in the main character Kiki as she moves from childhood to adolescence."

In 2019, I made it into an orchestral work as a symphonic suite for a number in the domestic tour of Joe Hisaishi and the World Dream Orchestra (W.D.O.) 30 years after the film was released. Some of the musical scores that I used for the film were lost, so that created some difficulty in the production. But, looking back once again at the path I took thirty years ago provided me the opportunity for much reflection mixed with admiration, and I was able to enjoy the time.

At the advent of publishing the score in 2021, I have altered the orchestration to some extent. But it has the same basic structure as the W.D.O. concert which follows the storyline of the film."

A recording of Joe Hisaishi's Symphonic Suite “Kiki’s Delivery Service” was released by Universal Music Japan and can be purchased here.
