Kafka's very short story Der Kreisel ("the top") describes a philosopher who is only happy in the brief instant in which he catches child's spinning top while it still spins. In the very next moment, he is disgusted with himself...and on the lookout for the next top! The search for universal truth and personal happiness is as hopeless as the attempt to write a piece of music that does everything you wanted it to do...and as impossible to give up on.
All sounds in the tape are manipulations of recordings of a spinning top in a cast-iron skillet and a recitation of the Kafka text.
