Le Tombeau du Petit Princeharpsichord (1978)
|Commission||Commissioned by the Austrian Radio, Graz|
|Premiere||October 13, 1978 Graz (A) Musikprotokoll 1978 · Elisabeth Chojnacka, harpsichord|
Ever since reading Antoine de Saint-Exupery's magical The Little Prince as a youngster long ago, I have been convinced that a true work of art should be able to communicate as successfully to children as to adults without any loss of artistic integrity. In preparing to compose Le tombeau du petit prince I re-read Saint-Exupery's lovely parable and again experienced what a direct contact with the child in me it made. Consequently, in Le tombeau... and, indeed, in all my music since, I have tried to create work that speaks equally to the humanity of all its listeners.
Le tombeau du petit prince, for harpsichord solo, is performed in one continuous movement. It is built upon the repetition of melodic groups, modified by changes in tempo, density, and register. It was commissioned by the Austrian Radio, Graz for Elisabeth Chonacka and was premiered at the 1978 Styrian Autumn Festival.
