World Premiere of Wolfgang Rihm's <em>Transitus</em> with Filarmonica della Scala

On May 5, Filarmonica della Scala gave the world premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s Transitus, a new orchestral work commissioned by Teatro alla Scala in honor of the 150th birthday of Richard Strauss. In the second of three programs paying homage to the composer, Transitus received its premiere alongside Strauss’s Death and Transfiguration and Four Last Songs; all works concerned with themes of death and transition. Riccardo Chailly, who takes over as principle conductor at La Scala next year, conducted the premiere. The performance took place at Teatro alla Scala, with an additional performance on May 7 at Palazzo di Congressi, in Lugano, Switzerland.

Also this month, Staatsoper Hamburg’s Opera Stabile mounts “Black Box 20_21: Ophelia”, a theater production featuring Rihm’s Ende der Handschrift, for voice and piano. Based on the literary myth of Ophelia, the production also features performances of Christian Jost’s Hamlet Echoes, for soprano, viola and piano, with soprano Gabriele Rossmanith.
