World Premiere of Tokuhide Niimi's <em>Trio "ad lucem"</em> with harpist Ayako Shinozaki

Ayako Shinozaki, one of Japan’s most revered harpists, gives the world premiere of Tokuhide Niimi's new work for clarinet, cello and harp, titled Trio "ad lucem" this month. The performance, part of Shinozaki’s concert series “Exhibition of the Harp”, takes place on April 8 at Tokyo’s Bunka Kaikan Recital Hall with cellist Masaharu Kanda and clarinetist Takashi Yamane. Of the work, which is dedicated to Shinozaki, Niimi writes:

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake (March 11, 2011), awe, anger and grief has never faded from my mind. The title of this new work, "ad lucem", means “to the light;” I wrote this piece as a musical prayer for light, as if the light were like that in a painting by Johannes Vermeer.

Niimi's music, at once deeply romantic and of considerable intellect, reflects two worlds: one of melodic delicacy, elegance and sensuality, and another of rhythmic propulsion with constructive, centrifugal energy. His continued creative activity, most recently represented in Trio "ad lucem", is devoted to effecting a unification of these two worlds.
