World Premiere of Thomas Larcher's Chiasma

Feb. 27, 2018

World Premiere of Thomas Larcher's Chiasma

On March 15-16, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, led by Andris Nelsons, will present the world premiere of Thomas Larcher's Chiasma for orchestra. The composer notes:

“Greek letter X (= chi), is defined as either ‘an anatomical intersection’ or within a genetic context ‘a cross-shaped configuration of paired chromatids’. This reminds me of the method I have used over many years in my music. The piece develops out of simple motifs, quickly evolves in disparate directions through their juxtaposition, and achieves a ‘doublepeak climax’ before collapsing into itself. The challenge I posed myself was to develop a 10-minute piece containing an entire world, with its murderous amplitude, its tenderness and beauty, and its brutality and futility.”

Following the world premiere, Chiasma will receive several repeat performances: Hamburg on April 24, Amsterdam (Dutch premiere) on April 25, Brussels (Belgian premiere) on April 27, Baden-Baden on April 28, Köln on April 29, Paris (French premiere) on May 3, and Madrid (Spanish premiere) on May 6.
