Wolfgang Rihm's Reminiszenz (Hamburg) Debuts at Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

On January 11, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg celebrates its inaugural concert with the world premiere of Wolfgang Rihm’s Reminiszenz (Hamburg), a new work for tenor and large orchestra. Conductor Thomas Hengelbrock leads the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester in the premiere with tenor soloist Pavol Breslik. The new work, subtitled “Triptychon und Spruch in memoriam Hans Henny Jahnn”, sets text from the eponymous playwright, author, and organ builder, as well as by German poet Peter Huchel and Swiss writer Walter Muschg.

Construction for the new concert hall, located in the HafenCity quarter of Hamburg on the Elbe River, began in 2007 and was finally completed in late 2016. The long-awaited inaugural concert event, titled “Zum Raum wird hier die Zeit”, marks the beginning of a three-week festival and includes music by Beethoven, Cavalieri, Liebermann, Messiaen, Praetorius, Wagner, and Zimmermann in addition to the new piece by Wolfgang Rihm.
