Wolfgang Rihm's Lichtes Spiel at the New York Philharmonic with Anne-Sophie Mutter

Nov. 02, 2010

November 18, 2010 sees the world premiere of Lichtes Spiel, for solo violin and orchestra, composed by Wolfgang Rihm for world-renowned violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. Mutter and Rihm have a history of collaboration which traces back to the first commission he wrote for her, 1991’s After Song. Mutter commissioned Lichtes Spiel specifically to be performed alongside Mozart violin concertos as an attempt to open the dialogue between classical and contemporary music with a smaller, Mozart-sized orchestra. Though Mutter conducts the Mozart concerti herself in this performance, conductor Michael Francis leads Mutter and the New York Philharmonic in the premiere of Lichtes Spiel. The program is repeated on November 19, 20, and 23.
