Wolfgang Rihm's Duo Concerto Premieres with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra

The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra premieres Wolfgang Rihm’s Duo Concerto for violin, cello and orchestra on October 11 at SUNY Purchase in Westchester, New York. The work was written especially for Orpheus and the husband-and-wife soloists Jan Vogler and Mira Wang.

Duo Concerto was commissioned by Friends of Dresden Music Foundation with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra as “a musical tribute to international reconciliation”. The piece celebrates the tenth anniversary of the reopening of the Frauenkirche, Church of Our Lady, in Dresden, a Lutheran Church that has become a beloved destination as a place of worship and a marvel of architecture.

Following the world premiere at Purchase College, Orpheus gives a performance at Carnegie Hall on October 15 as well as at the Frauenkirche in Dresden on October 24. On November 14, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra performs the work at the Esplanade Concert Hall in Singapore, conducted by Lan Shui.

Also this month, Mark Mandarano leads the Sinfonietta of Riverdale in the US premiere of Rihm's Erscheinung ("Sketch of Schubert"), for nine strings and piano. The performance takes place at the Riverdale Temple in the Bronx, NY on October 25.
