Weill in April: <em>Walt Whitman Songs</em>, <em>The Seven Deadly Sins</em>, and <em>Silbersee-Gesänge</em>

Kurt Weill’s Walt Whitman Songs receive several airings this month. First, baritone William Sharp and the El Paso Symphony Orchestra conducted by Bohuslav Rattay, conductor, perform all four songs – in the version for voice and orchestra – as part of the ongoing “Music Unwound: Kurt Weill’s America” consortium on April 14. The concert also includes The Seven Deadly Sins, with Lisa Vroman as Anna I. Then, soprano Anna Prohaska and pianist Eric Schneider take selections on their European recital tour with performances on April 16 at Kempen Klassik, April 18 at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, April 24 at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and April 26 at the L’Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg. Prohaska and Schneider recorded two of the songs, Beat! Beat! Drums and Dirge for Two Veterans on their 2014 album, “Behind the Lines,” available from Deutsche Grammophon. 2019 marks the 200th anniversary of Walt Whitman’s birth. As his bicentennial year approaches, artists looking to celebrate his legacy through music should also consider Marc Blitzstein’s Twelve Whitman Songs, available in their entirety as part of the third volume of The Marc Blitzstein Songbook.

Also coming up this month, Weill is on the bill for two performances in Warsaw: The Warsaw Philharmonic performs Silbersee-Gesänge, conducted by Ernst Theis, April 6; and the Royal String Quartet performs String Quartet No. 1, op. 8 at the Warsaw Philharmonic Chamber Music Hall, April 17. Storm Large performs The Seven Deadly Sins with the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra and conductor Carlos Kalmar, April 27 in Dublin.
