World Premiere of Toshio Hosokawa's Umarmung with Bamberger Symphoniker; US Premiere of Circulating Ocean with Oregon Symphony

On April 30, Jakub Hruša leads the Bamberger Symphoniker in the world premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s Umarmung "Licht und Schatten" for organ and orchestra with soloist Christian Schmitt. The premiere takes place at the Philharmonie in Cologne as part of the Acht-Brücken-Festival. As Hosokawa describes, Umarmung explores the intersection of the two types of Chi, Yin and Yang, of which their flow is the source of life.

Earlier this month, Jun Markl leads the Oregon Symphony in the US premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s Circulating Ocean for orchestra. The performance takes place April 22 at Portland's Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. The 22-minute piece, which was commissioned by the Salzburg Festival, uses water and its cycles to express a similar cycle in human life. In Hosokawa’s own words:

Circulating Ocean is more than programme music, more than a one-dimensional description of nature – the cycle of the element of water is a symbol of the cycle of human life, of our attachment to nature, of our striving for emptiness, removal of boundaries and perfection.

Listen to a recording of Circulating Ocean below, performed by Jonathan Stockhammer and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI at the 2009 MITO Festival:

On April 6, Hosokawa’s acclaimed third opera Matsukaze returns to La Monnaie (where it premiered in 2011) reuniting the original cast and creative team in its debut production by Sasha Waltz. Pablo Heras-Casado leads the orchestra, with Barbara Hannigan and Charlotte Hellekant in the leading roles. The production runs from April 6 through 9, before traveling to Poland’s Teatr Wielki from April 21 to 23
