US Premiere of Toshio Hosokawa's <em>Blossoming II</em> with Detroit Symphony Orchestra

On January 22, Toshio Hosokawa’s recent work for chamber orchestra, Blossoming II, receives its US premiere with Jun Märkle leading the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. The performance takes place at Detroit’s Orchestra Hall, with repeat performances on January 24 and 25.

Commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival Society, Blossoming II was premiered in 2011 by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Robin Ticciati. Hosokawa writes of the work’s reflection on “[t]he deep roots of flowers in Japanese aesthetics and spirituality.” He continues:

Over the last few years I have composed on the theme of 'flowers'. My grandfather was a master of Ikebana (the traditional Japanese art of flower arrangement); Zeami, the original practioner of the traditional Japanese theatre form Nō, considered the best performer a 'flower'. The deep roots of flowers in Japanese aesthetics and spirituality led me to them as the subject of this work. The flower I’m imagining in this work is a lotus, which is the symbolic flower of Buddhism. The flower and I are one; the blossoming of the flower represents my shedding of my skin, my self-discovery.

Also this season, Märkle leads the Oregon Symphony in two performances of Blossoming II on March 21 and 22 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
