US Premiere of Peter Sculthorpe's <em>Sun Music IV</em> at Loyola University of Chicago

Peter Sculthrope’s Sun Music IV receives its US premiere on November 4 by the Loyola University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra. The performance opens the University’s Celebrating Galileo Festival, a month-long series of concerts, lectures and theatrical productions honoring the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s letter to Christina of Lorraine, Grand-Duchesse of Tuscany. This letter has become an essential historical artifact containing insight into the relations of religion and science, biblical interpretation, and the history of education in the west.

Sculthorpe’s Sun Music IV embodies the unknown universe and depicts the emptiness of space. Similar to the orchestral works of Krzysztof Penderecki, Sun Music IV is an exploration of color, duration, tone, and timbre. “It grows, it blossoms, it evolves with as much variety as the images in a kaleidoscope,” hails The Montreal Star, “and like a kaleidoscope it seems to fix the listeners attention at a central point, [with] musical ideas as fresh and as striking as those we have seen in the field of painting."

The premiere takes place in Mundelein Auditorium, led by Colin Holman.
