Toronto New Music Concerts Presents Jörg Widmann Portrait

On April 18, Toronto’s New Music Concerts presents a portrait concert of composer and clarinetist Jörg Widmann. The evening highlights six chamber works by Widmann, with four Canadian premieres. In addition to the first Canadian performance of Air, for solo horn, and Five Fragments for clarinet and piano, Widmann himself performs his well-known piece for solo clarinet, Fantasie. Widmann also conducts the New Music Concerts Ensemble in the Canadian premieres of Freie Stucke, Liebeslied and Dubairische Tänze.

Prior to his Canadian appearance, Widmann, who serves as principal guest conductor of the Irish Chamber Orchestra, leads the ensemble in a performance of his string sextet, 180 Beats Per Minute on April 6 in Heidelberg, Germany. Afterward, Widmann travels to the US to perform his Fantasie in two concerts sponsored by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. The first concert takes place on April 10 at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, followed by a performance on April 11 at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall.
