Thomas Larcher's A Padmore Cycle in New Version with Mark Padmore and the Wiener Klaviertrio

Jun. 01, 2017

Thomas Larcher's A Padmore Cycle in New Version with Mark Padmore and the Wiener Klaviertrio

On June 20, tenor Mark Padmore joins the Wiener Klaviertrio for the world premiere performance of a new chamber version of Thomas Larcher’s A Padmore Cycle at the Wiener Konzerthaus. The new arrangement was jointly commissioned by the Wiener Konzerthaus, Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele, the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam and Wigmore Hall.

Larcher’s A Padmore Cycle, originally composed for tenor and prepared piano in 2011 and later expanded into a large orchestral version in 2014, is shaped closely around the text of short poems and fragments by Alois Hotschnig and Hans Aschenwald. Despite its fragmentary nature, a continuum is created, each ‘song’ led seamlessly on to the next by a thread of sound.

In the below video, Larcher discusses his Padmore Cycle along with an excerpt of the orchestral version:

Subsequent performances of the new version for tenor and piano trio take place at Ludwigsburger Schlossfestspiele 2017 in Germany (June 22), London’s Wigmore Hall (June 26) and the Muziekgebouw Amsterdam (April 12, 2018). View a score of the orchestral version here.
