The Somme100FILM Tour Continues Around the World

The Somme100FILM tour – an international project commemorating the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War – continues to captivate musicians and audiences around the world. From July 2016 through July 2017, the project aims to present 100 orchestral performances of UK composer Laura Rossi’s acclaimed live orchestral score alongside the iconic World War I silent film The Battle of the Somme. On November 18, conductor John Gibbons led the BBC Concert Orchestra in a highly anticipated performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall.

To date there have been over 70 performances and counting, with events having taken place across the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Germany, France, Holland and Canada. The work is perfectly suited to orchestras of all levels, with many performances having been given by amateur, school and community ensembles.

The Battle of the Somme, as well as Rossi’s film score for The Battle of the Ancre, are available for live to projection performance using the restored film prints available from the Imperial War Museum (IWM). The two films are stunning documentaries, comprising archive footage from these French campaigns of 1916 and 1917 respectively and originally screened in cinemas as part of the war effort.
