The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, led by Ken-David Masur, Premieres Edmund Finnis' The Landscape Wakes

Feb. 27, 2026

On February 6, Ken-David Masur and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra premiered Edmund Finnis' The Landscape Wakes. This new work explores the sensation that landscapes aren't just backdrops, but living entities resonating with us

The composer notes: "The Landscape Wakes is the final piece in a decade-spanning trilogy of orchestral works focusing on our perception of the world around us - how it moves, and how we are moved by it. This new piece contains the most agile, forceful music of the trilogy, as well as the most tender. While composing, I kept in my mind the mental image of the world’s spinning on its axis. I wanted the music to be constantly in motion, its lines and harmonies turning and revolving. The ‘landscape’ of the title is no specific place. It is every landscape. And the waking - the dawning, the renewal - is perpetual."

Nicholas Carter and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra will give the UK premiere of The Landscape Wakes on March 14 at The Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Additionally, the Manchester Collective will perform Finnis' String Quartet No. 2 on March 19 at the Elbphilharmonie, Kleiner Saal in Hamburg.
