Summer in Salzburg: From Baroque to Contemporary with Bärenreiter

Aug. 24, 2025

Bärenreiter repertoire is everywhere at this year’s Salzburg Festival. Giulio Cesare in Egitto was one of Handel’s most successful operas during his lifetime. The fact that it remains one of the most frequently performed operas today is thanks to its richness in staged variants as well as its imaginative arias and ensembles, which differentiate between basic musical characteristics in virtuoso style. The Festival's new production was premiered on July 26, under the baton of Emmanuelle Haïm in the Felsenreitschule Theatre. This was followed by a semi-staged new production featuring excerpts from Mozart’s singspiel Zaide, led by Raphaël Pichon on August 17-22. Further musical high points include a semi-staged performance of Mozart’s Mitridate, re di Ponto on August 4 led by Ádám Fischer, and concert performances on August 27 and 29 of Rameau’s Castor et Pollux with Teodor Currentzis. Finally, Beat Furrer’s Prophezeiungenfor alto, contrabass clarinet and accordion was performed on July 19 in concert with Cantando Admont, conducted by Bürgi. The concert also included Arvo Pärt's Sarah Was Ninety Years Old and motets by Orlando di Lasso.
