Oct. 31, 2026

Sarasota Opera opened its 68th season with a new production of Englebert Humberdinck's beloved opera, Hansel and Gretel in a delightful English singing translation by Cori Ellison. This exciting production of Hansel and Gretel, conducted by Anthony Barrese and directed by Felicity Stiverson, marks the first-ever mainstage collaboration between Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Youth Opera, and Sarasota Ballet School’s Margaret Barbieri Conservatory and Sarasota Ballet Studio Company.

Engelbert Humperdinck's delightful and family-friendly opera Hansel and Gretel, based on the Brothers Grimm fairytale, is a perennial favorite, enjoyed by audiences both young and old throughout the world. Cori Ellison's spirited English singing translation of the opera offers companies a fresh take on this classic work.

Ellison's singing translation was published by Schott Music shortly after being commissioned and premiered by the New York City Opera. Since its premiere, it has been performed by numerous opera companies.
