Robert Beaser's <em>Song of the Bells</em> with the Utah Valley Symphony

On February 25 and 26, Bryce Rytting leads the Utah Valley Symphony in a performance of Robert Beaser’s Song of the Bells, for flute and orchestra, with soloist April Clayton. The performance takes place at the Provo Covey Center for the Arts in Provo, Utah.

Song of the Bells was commissioned by a consortium of flutists comprised of Paula Robison, Ransom Wilson and Carol Wincenc, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The work received its premiere in 1987 with Enrique Arturo Diemecke conducting Robison and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. In his liner notes for the work’s premiere recording, David Wright writes:

Song of the Bells is in the shape of an asymmetrical arch, beginning in a haze of disorganized percussion sounds, slowly gathering speed, and eventually reaching a peak of motoric energy and brilliance (the tempo marking in the score is Avanti!), then quickly dying away to a nearly inaudible tintinnabulation.
