Opera Providence Performs Lee Hoiby's One-Act Monologues
Oct. 04, 2007
This month Opera Providence will perform Lee Hoiby's one-act musical monologue The Italian Lesson as part of an all Hoiby program. TheItalian Lesson is an operatic incarnation of one of Ruth Draper's most popular character sketches. Originally titled The Busy Mother, the work offers a view into the hectic life of a New York society matron as she attempts to balance her daily activities. Valeria Nicolesi will portray the heroine in the Opera Providence performance.
Also in the program is Hoiby's Bon Appétite, another musical monologue transcribed from a Julia Child television broadcast. The performances will take place on Friday October 26 at 8pm and Sunday October 28 at 3pm in the Columbus Theater of Providence, Rhode Island. Music Director Timothy Steele conducts productions staged by Peter Sampeiri and Patricia Weinmann.
