New Music by Morton Subotnick Featured in Multi-Media Performance by Arena Dances
Oct. 04, 2007
New music by Morton Subotnick will be showcased in the upcoming multi-media dance performance Ugly by the ensemble Arena Dances at the Walker Art Center of Minneapolis on October 18-20 at 8:00 PM. Commissioned by the Walker Art Center, Ugly features Subotnick's A Fluttering of Wings, rewritten for violin, cello and piano and his new work The Other Piano. The performance will explore notions and perceptions of beauty, examining various cultural influences throughout the ages and today's mania of superficiality that drives styles and trends. Directed by Peter Rothstein with choreography by Arena Dances artistic director Mathew Janczewski, Subotnick's compositions are an ideal pairing for the work in their kinetic and abstract nature. Janczewski had this to say on the collaboration:
I am just amazed by Morton's ability to play. I particularly like to play with different ideas of movements and structures of them, and it was especially nice to see how Morton does the same with a simple sound. He is tireless at getting the job done in a way that pleases him and me as the choreographer; asking questions and guiding the creative process in such a way of opening it up to fully realize all aspects of the work.
