Naxos Honors Stravinsky and Korngold Anniversaries with New Recordings

Aug. 06, 2007

2007 marks the 125 birthday of Igor Stravinsky and the 50 year anniversary of Eric h Wolfgang Korngold’s death. To celebrate the 125th anniversary of Stravinsky’s birth, Naxos has released a new CD of Stravinsky works which features his Violin Concerto in D Major with Jennifer Frautschi on violin and Robert Craft leading the Philharmonia Orchestra. The CD is already garnering critical acclaim, as Michael Tumelty from The Herald, Glasgow exclaims:

"A record of the year. No question about it. This is a stupendous collection conducted by the legendary and controversial Robert Craft with the great Philharmonia at its earthy best. Jennifer Frautschi scorches the ears with her bristling account of the Violin Concerto."

In honor of the composer Korngold, Naxos has released a new installment to its Film Music Classics series with world premiere recordings of Korngold’s complete scores to the classic films The Sea Hawk (1940) and Deception (1946). William Stromberg conducts the Moscow Symphony Orchestra and Chorus on this double disc recording which includes music omitted from the final release version of The Sea Hawk, as well as the Cello Concerto as presented in the film Deception, not the concert hall version. The Naxos recording also includes the trailer music for both films. A Financial Times review reads:

"First complete recordings of The Sea Hawk, widely regarded as Korngold's finest film score, and Deception, his last, will be self-recommending to film music aficionados. The performances are thoroughly researched, and the notes are excellent. The lush romanticism and fabulous derring-do of Korngold the Hollywood composer shine through."

The Sea Hawk Overture will be performed this month by the Pasadena Pops on August 17 and 18. Other notable Korngold performances this month include his Violin Concerto by Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico City on August 4 and 5, and his Captain Blood Overture by the Whiting Park Festival Orchestra, Indiana on August 18
