Matthew Hindson’s Double Piano Concerto at Sydney Symphony Orchestra
Jun. 01, 2011
May 12 marked the world premiere of Matthew Hindson’s Concerto for Two Pianos, performed by Pascal and Ami Rogé with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and led by Vladimir Ashkenazy. Commissioned by the pianists on the occasion of their marriage, the work celebrates the rite of marriage with a bright, lively score with motifs that evoke celebratory bell peals throughout its two movements. Read what the critics have to say:
The first movement gave the pianos a series of scales and pealing bell patterns, somewhat masked by the orchestral accompaniment of repetitive riffs and static harmony. The mood was breathless and expectant, like the close of the first movement of Ravel's Piano Concerto extended for an entire movement.
- Peter McCallum, Sydney Morning Herald…the delicate, shimmering textures and Messiaen-like sonorities were enchanting.
- Murray Black, The Australian
