Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock at Opera Saratoga

Jul. 01, 2017

Marc Blitzstein's The Cradle Will Rock at Opera Saratoga

From July 9 to 16, Opera Saratoga’s summer festival features a fully staged production of American composer and lyricist Marc Blitzstein’s iconic The Cradle Will Rock, and the first to use Blitzstein's original orchestration in the last 57 years.

Highly controversial at the time it was written, The Cradle Will Rock depicts the struggle between big corporations and labor unions. Still a relevant topic to this day, the new fully staged production at Opera Saratoga celebrates the 80th anniversary of the premiere in 1937 when its Broadway run was shut down on opening night. In defiance of the government's attempt to close the production, Blitzstein and his production team brought the show uptown where it was performed in a legindary bare-bones presentation with only piano accompaniment.

"Nickel Under the Foot" from The Cradle Will Rock; Patti LuPone; Acting Company (1985)

Conducted by John Mauceri and directed by Lawrence Edelson, the production’s cast includes Ginger Costa-Jackson, Matt Boehler and Audrey Babcock. In an in-depth New York Times profile outlining Cradle's history and Opera Saratoga's new production, written by Joshua Barone, Edelson comments that, regardless of a viewer's political persuasion, the work "hits a nerve. It's inherently part of the DNA of our society." Opera Saratoga's performances will be recorded for commercial release, the first ever available with Blitzstein's original orchestration.
