Los Angeles Philharmonic Features Matthias Pintscher and Beat Furrer

On December 9, Matthias Pintscher leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in the US premiere of Beat Furrer’s linea dell’orizzonte as well as the West Coast premiere of Pintscher’s songs from Solomon’s garden. The performance takes place at Walt Disney Hall as part of Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Green Umbrella series, featuring baritone Evan Hughes.

Pintscher’s songs from Solomon’s garden premiered in 2010 with baritone Thomas Hampson and Alan Gilbert leading the New York Philharmonic. The piece is a striking setting of a song from the Shir-ha shirim, the Song of Solomon. Of the work, Pintscher writes:

The starting point of the composition is the text: the aura, archaism and intensity of the songs in their concentration. The language is so expressive, because it is so compressed. The words are islands of expression; they circle within themselves and are so rich in substance that each word radiates towards the next. There is so much space for sound in them, for music. The text allows other parameters, the sound, to join together without corrupting the autonomy of the words.

Beat Furrer’s linea dell’orizzonte (“study of distorted shadows”) was premiered by Ensemble Ascolta and explores “the phenomenon of doubling, but also of the distortion into a shadow…resulting from this intersecting of voices into each other.”
