Leonardo Marino's Re-Conception: A New Triple Concerto is Born
May. 29, 2025
Leonardo Marino's Re-Conception, a new triple concerto for violin, cello, piano and orchestra was premiered on May 6 in Orvieto, Italy and the following day in Ravenna, Italy.
Re-Conception was written for the Trio Concept and the Vittorio Calamani Philharmonic Orchestra, and commissioned by the Angelo Mariani Music Association. The performance was conducted by Nicola Valentini. The work originated as a reimagining of an earlier trio piece titled Conception. In a curious twist of fate, the orchestral version premiered first, preceding the solo trio version. Both pieces were composed during Marino’s residency at the Herrenhaus in Edenkoben, a period of research and experimentation during which he felt a strong urge to "reconceive" his way of composing. Re-Conception reflects this tension: it is a direct piece, rich in groove, and deeply rooted in his musical background – jazz, prog, and fusion – his earliest creative loves. This music stems from a dialectical and improvisatory process with the material itself. Marino sought to bring the surface level of the music as close as possible to its deeper structure, attempting to make the two almost coincide. This pursuit has permeated all of his current work.
Leonardo Marino (1992) is a Sicilian composer based in Milan whose education encompasses both classical and jazz music. He studied composition in Milan with Alessandro Solbiati and in Geneva with Michael Jarrell. His music has been awarded first prize in a number of international competitions such as the George Enescu Competition and Concorso Internazionale di Composizione 2 Agosto, and has been performed by several orchestras and ensembles, including Ensemble Intercontemporain, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, OSE! Orchestra, Pannon Philharmonic Orchestra, Divertimento Ensemble, Mdi Ensemble, Ukho Ensemble, Ensemble Prometeo, Ensemble Contrechamps, IEMA. Marino's catalogue, published by SZ Sugar, features solo, chamber and orchestral works, as well as vocal and operatic titles.
