Kurt Weill's <em>Walt Whitman Songs</em> with Ian Bostridge

On April 17, New York’s Park Avenue Armory hosts tenor Ian Bostridge and pianist Wenwen Du for a recital of songs exploring the music and poetry of the Great War, which includes a performance of Kurt Weill’s Walt Whitman Songs. Bostridge has become a proponent of Weill’s Walt Whitman Songs, having performed them at the Aldeburgh Festival, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and the Berliner Staatsoper in recent years.

Originally composed for baritone Paul Robeson, Weill’s cycle was first performed in 1947 by tenor William Horne and pianist Adam Garner. The cycle sets four of Whitman’s poems: "Beat! Beat! Drums!," "O Captain! My Captain!," "Dirge for Two Veterans,” and "Come up from the Fields, Father." A new edition of the score published by European American Music addresses the different ranges of the original compositions by presenting all four songs in two separate sets: one for tenor and one for baritone. The songs are also available in a full orchestra version for both voice types.
