Jonathan Harvey's <em>Moving Trees</em> at USC

British composer Jonathan Harvey's gorgeous and reflective work, Moving Trees, is performed February 29 at the University of Southern California by the USC Contemporary Music Ensemble directed by Dr. Donald Crockett. Scored for chamber ensemble of 18 players, Moving Trees was commissioned by the Ictus Ensemble for the Rosas Dance Company to accompany a scene from Counter Phrases, a dance film by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.

Harvey says of his piece:

The film showed three beautiful girls moving amongst trees and leaves with the summer sunlight casting ever-changing shadow-shapes on their bodies as they seemed to become one with the natural world. The trees' verticality is literally mirrored by a 'tall' pedal note in octaves, held through much of the score.

Written in 2002, Moving Trees was premiered the following year at the Ars Musica Festival in Brussels by the Ictus Ensemble. Additional composers commissioned for the project included Steve Reich, Toshio Hosokawa, and Georges Aperghis.
