Jonathan Biss Pairs Schubert and Singleton in New York City

May. 30, 2025

On May 8, renowned pianist Jonathan Biss performed Alvin Singleton's Bed-Stuy Sonata at The Crypt under The Church of the Intercession in two concerts presented by Death of Classical. These performances were part of a three-day series pairing Schubert's final three piano sonatas with new works for solo piano by Alvin Singleton, Tyson Gholston Davis, and Tyshawn Sorey.

Jonathan Biss gave the world premiere performance of Singleton's Bed-Stuy Sonata on March 1 at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts in Scottsdale, AZ and has performed the work throughout the US. Bed-Stuy Sonata was co-commissioned for Jonathan Biss by San Francisco Performances, the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
