Ian Wilson's In fretta, in vento at Carnegie Hall; Wilson's Cartography Sees US Premiere in Brooklyn
Oct. 01, 2008
The ConTempo Quartet of Galway, Ireland perform Ian Wilson's In fretta, in vento on October 17 as part of the New Music, New Ireland program at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall. The event is presented by the Contemporary Music Center Ireland in association with Culture Ireland. Composed in 2001 following his fifth quartet ...wander, darkling, which was written following the NATO bombing of Belgrade, In fretta, in vento is similarly grave in nature, as it was composed shortly after the attacks of September 11. Wilson writes,
Just as I was about to begin, the terrorist attacks on America took place. The piece is imbued with a sense of loss, looking backwards and upwards at the same time. Its dynamic ‘distance' evokes in me the idea of the music reaching forward through the ages; a remnant or echo of a time when faith seemed simpler and stronger (even if it wasn't!).
Also this month, violinist Gregory Harrington performs the US premiere of Wilson's Cartography for solo violin in the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Brooklyn, New York as part of the Good Shepherd Chamber Music Series on October 26.
