Howard Shore's <em>The Fly</em> in German Premiere at Theater Treir

The Fly, a two-act opera by Howard Shore, receives its first German performance on January 18 in Trier. David Cronenberg and Shore created the Oscar-winning horror film, "The Fly", in 1986. Together with librettist David Henry Hwang, the two met again, nearly 22 years later, for the creation of an operatic treatment. Rather than incorporating any music from his original soundtrack, Shore composed a completely new score for the opera, while Cronenberg transformed his characters substantially for the opera stage. The world premiere, which took place in Paris in July 2008, was conducted by Plácido Domingo, who commissioned the work. Los Angeles Opera presented the US premiere later the same year.

For Theater Trier's production, director Sebastian Welker has staged the work under the baton of Joongbae Jee, with costume design by Angela C. Schuett and stage design by Gerd Hofmann and Arlette Schwanenberg. In the work, Seth Brundle, a scientist, experiments with the process of teleportation, an experiment which goes horribly wrong. 

With The Fly, Theater Trier continues its focus on contemporary operas from beyond European boundaries. Seven performances of The Fly follow the first night through March 2014.
