Gunther Schuller (1925-2015)

Schott|EAM mourns the loss of the great American composer Gunther Schuller on June 21 at the age of 89. Conductor, horn player, editor, virtuoso orchestrator, teacher and many things besides, Schuller enjoyed a full career as musical polymath even before adding the role of self-taught composer who in 1957 devised 'third-stream' music, fusing serialism and jazz improvisation.

Schott publishes a small number of Schuller's works including the orchestral pieces Contours (1955-58), Spectra (1956-58) and Contrasts (1961), the Piano Concerto (1962), and his later Wind Quintet (1984). Works published by Universal Edition include Royal Palace (1967) for orchestra, Sinfonie (1950) for brass and percussion, String Quartet No. 1 (1957) and 7 Studies on Themes of Paul Klee (1959) for orchestra.
